Capital Credit Union has been alerted to a sophisticated fraudulent SMS (text message) campaign that is currently circulating and targeting mobile phone users nationwide.
We urge all our members to be extremely vigilant.
How the Scam Works
The scam involves members of the public receiving a text message that appears to come from the number “51472”.
The message reads: “CREDIT UNION: A new Payee (JAMIE SMITH) has been added to your account. Contact us immediately on 015134884 if this wasn’t you.”
If a recipient calls the phone number provided (01-513-4884), the call is answered by a fraudster with the greeting, “Welcome to Credit Union Services.”
The fraudster will then attempt to persuade the caller to provide their personal details, account credentials, passwords, or other sensitive information.
This is a fraudulent attempt to gain access to your account.
IMPORTANT: What to Do
- DO NOT call the number or reply to this message.
- DO NOT click on any links if they are included.
- DELETE the message immediately.
Remember: We will never contact you by phone or SMS to ask for your full account details, passwords, or PINs.
What to Do if You Responded to the Message
If you have already called this number, or if you have provided any personal or account information, please take the following steps immediately:
- Contact Capital Credit Union directly using our official phone number on 01 299 0400.
